Escaping the Dead preview

Scheduled to be released to coincide with Halloween, Escaping the Dead is a Danish horror indie that takes a definitive anti-drug position.

The low budget zombie film, which has been in production since 2012, starts during a typical day for the lead character, David. He is a marijuana pusher, but he is the kind of dealer who smokes more than he sells. When David and his partner in crime Ahmir gets in some serious money trouble and finds out that seeling weed isn’t going to help, they decide to try selling hard drugs. But the cocaine turns out to have a terrible side effect, creating a giant zombie outbreak that spreads across the entire Copenhagen.

Escaping the Dead is inspired by a series of articles about the death drug “Krokodil” that was published in 2012, about the same time as Ronald Poppo had his face eaten by a naked man hooked on bath salt in Miami. Could drugs really turn people into, if not cannibals, then at least zombies?

Directed by Martin Sonntag and Bastian Brinch Pedersen, the film stars Bastian Brinch Pedersen as David, Rama Øzel as Ahmir, along with Dorte Rømer (Breaking the Waves) and Kim Sønderholm (Cannibal Fog, Run, House of Many Sorrows). Recently Lone Fleming, legendary horror actress from the Blind Dead series and of Danish origin joined the cast to play David’s mother. Additionally, legendary Troma producer Lloyd Kaufman is featured in a cameo as a sex tourist.
