Finland is perhaps more known for vodka drinking knife fights in saunas (or mobile phones, great design and licorice) than science fiction films, but coming up is Iron Sky, about Nazis hidden on the Moon and not being content with that anymore.
During World War 2, Nazi engineers built a spaceship in the Antarctic which could transport people to the dark side of the Moon. There they decided to stay, until the time to invade the Earth was right. Now it’s the year 2018, and the Space Nazis are coming… That’s the premise of Iron Sky, a science fiction comedy currently being prepared by a group of Finnish movie creators, under the direction of Timo Vuorensola, who previously directed the successful indie Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning. The film is also co-produced by German and Australian companies. According to the director, the movie will have a “classic sci-fi meets steampunk aesthetics mixed with early 1900s industrialized look” to it.
What makes Iron Sky special is the wide ranging collaboration with fans and community. The movie’s fans join in creating ideas and content for the movie in a collaborative platform called Wreckamovie, give the film publicity by sharing information online, and even fund the movie by designing and buying merchandize and other means. One million euros of the 6.5 million euro budget comes from fan funding. Planning of the movie started already in 2006, with pre-production starting in 2008.
The movie starts shooting this month in Frankfurt, Germany, where half the film will be shot over 6 weeks. Shooting continues in Australia in January 2011. Julia Dietze, Udo Kier (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Grindhouse, Dracula 3000), Tilo Prückner, Götz Otto (Schindler’s List, Der Untergang) and Christopher Kirby are the main cast.
