Norway’s first prequel movie ever, Cold Prey 3 (Fritt Vilt 3) opens October 15th, 2010 in Norway. It follows Cold Prey (2006) and Cold Prey 2 (2008) which were very popular movies in Norway. The new story is set in the mountain area of Jotunheimen in 1986.
Norway has in the first decade of the OOs been the leading slasher movie nation in Scandinavia, and the Cold Prey trilogy secures that position. Not only has this been 
the first regular horror trilogy in the Nordic region ever, but the new movie is also Norway’s first prequel, as it sets up the backstory for the first two movies. In spite of being criticized as formulaic and cliché-filled, the two original movies were huge successes, with over 500.000 people buying tickets. That’s 12% of Norway’s population, so the producers did not delay another chapter for long. They seem to have found a good formula; the movie was sold to Germany, Switzerland and Austria several weeks before it opens in Norway, while the earlier movies were sold to 25 countries.
Directed by feature debutant Mikkel Brænne Sandemose on a budget of about 2.9 million dollars, Cold Prey 3 tells the story of how the son of a hotel owner became a merciless mountain killer. Ten years after three people mysteriously disappeared in the winter landscape, a police officer and six young adults venture into the wilderness to go hiking. Soon they find themselves in the middle of a violent drama that sheds new light on what actually happened ten years earlier.
Lead actress Ida Marie Bakkerud says to the newspaper Dagbladet that “the shooting was a physical and psychological hell. I was exhausted and got into extreme situations all the time. But it was fun!” Director Sandemose admits he pressured his actors to do more than they expected, and says the creative team rewrote the script during the shooting to make events more challenging and realistic.
The movie features largely unknown actors, headed by Ida Marie Bakkerud, Julie Rusti, Terje Ranes, Kim S. Falck-Jørgensen, Sturla Rui, Arthur Berning, Nils Johnson, and Pål Stokka. The script was written by Peder Fuglerud (who wrote the Peter Stormare-starring Switch in 2007) and Lars Gudmestad (writer of Fatso and Ran).
