Amanda award nominees

thewaveposterIn Hollywood they give out the Oscar, in France they award a golden palm to movies, and in Sweden they let the best movies win a scarab. Yes, really! This year, Norway’s Amanda award includes quite a few genre nominees.

Yesterday the nominees for the annual Amanda film award was announced. The Amanda is the highest and most official accolade a movie can be given in Norway. Organized as part of the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund, the award originated in 1985, and has since 2005 been exclusively a film award, excluding television (which has it’s own award, Gullruten / The Golden Screen). Amanda winners are awarded a trophy at major, nationally televised show.

Back to the movies, and we’re happy to see that genre films are recognised, albeit many of them are children’s movies. One exception is The Wave, which is nominated for Best Movie, Best Direction, Best Cinematograpy, Best VFX, Best Music, and Best Sound Design. When was the last time a disaster movie was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars?!!?

Children’s movies often feature lots of fantasy elements, from talking sticks to time travel. This year, all three movies nominated for Best Children’s Movie touch the fantasy ground, in particular Doctor Proctor’s Timetub but also the two aminated Solan & Ludvig: From here to Flåklypa and Two Buddies and a Badger (original title: Knutsen & Ludvigsen og den fæle Rasputin). Both animated movies are also up for the Best Production Design award. Doctor Proctor‘s third nomination is for the VFX award.

A contender for Best Supporting Actress is Maria Bock for her role in the rape-revenge drama Hevn (Revenge).

Dark Woods 2 is also nominated in the Best Cinematography category, as well as in the Best Production Design category, while The Wave and Two Buddies were both nominated for their music.

In another technical category, Sound Design, The Wave and Dark Woods 2 take up two of three nomination spots.

Coincidentally, the Amanda show’s host will be Jakob Oftebro, whose little brother Jonas Hoff Oftebro stars in The Wave. This year’s show will take place on August 26 and will be televised on TV2.
